Get Rid of the Embargo on Cuba

Now that President Obama has made the first step into slowly thawing relations between Cuba and the United States, it is important that he does all that he can to finally get rid of this embargo. For as long as I can remember, it has been we are against Cuba because they are a communistic state and therefore, we do not ally ourselves with communists. Because Cuba did not listen to what Americans said, we now don’t import their sugar and their cigars. That’s frustrating and pretty stupid.

I don’t understand why we need to have an embargo on Cuba. The goal was to try and get rid of Fidel Castro and instead of doing that it gave him a scapegoat which was why he was able to stay in power for as long as he did. Castro has been around since my parents were born and what’s interesting is that even with him ill, his family still has control of Cuba. This demonstrates one very clear thing to the United States.

Our dumb embargo did absolutely nothing.

Why can’t the United States just get rid of this obsolete mentality of not importing or exporting goods from and to Cuba? All it has done is prevented the United States from developing a potentially strong trade ally. Cuba is so close to us that we wouldn’t have to worry about pirates taking our citizens hostage. We wouldn’t have to worry about a huge amount of cost in shipping goods. It’s so close, the profits would be great.

Our economy is weak right now because we don’t export enough and important far too much. We are a nation that is driven by imports. It is important that we gain as many trade allies as we can so that we are constantly gaining more power economically. Whether or not you believe in whatever economic policy you do, it is easy to understand that trade is a good thing. The United States creates some products (albeit a few) and it would be beneficial to ship them to Cuba.

I urge the United States to get rid of this stupid thinking. Cuba is going to be Cuba whether we like it or not. Fidel Castro isn’t in power anymore, but his brother is now. All we can do is put our differences aside and focus on the fact that there is the possibility of a great amount of money to be made if things go according to plan. All it will take is our politicians working to try and break all of these ridiculous laws.

Fortunately, we have a President who kept his promise. He was going to try and thaw the relations between Cuba and America. Apparently, he’s starting to do it and that’s a nice thing. I just look forward to the day when I can go to my local cigar shop and buy a Cuban because it’s there. Won’t that be nice?

Yes, fine Cuban cigars and other things that come out of Cuba would be nice however I still believe there should be limits. I would trade for things the Cuba people really need to improve their quality of life.

For instance, my brother is a broker for shipping goods throughout the US. Over the years, there has been countless incidences of truck trailers that are hi-jacked or stolen, repainted, and then are taken down to ports mostly in Miami and shipped/smuggled into Cuba. What is in these shipments? Mostly drugs from American drug companies that were supposed to make their ways to warehouses across the US for distribution to hospitals and clinics around the United States. What kind of drugs? Pharmacy brand sleep aids, pain killers. It’s the Cuban people who have suffered the most because of this embargo.

Castro stated to Kennedy that he didn’t like Imperialism and Capitalism when Kennedy stated he didn’t like socialism. In socialism, the voice of the people is non-existent. You take what the government gives you and are happy with that. Democracy gives ALL people a voice and a right to become successful, hard-working, contributing members of a strong growing society. Why and how could Castro deny his people of that? What ever good comes out of these thawing relations needs to do so always with the Cuban people in mind first and foremost. Even though his brother is in charge now doesn’t mean Castro still doesn’t have some sort of say in what happens.

Lifting an embargo without restrictions is like putting Fredo in full charge of the Corleone Family.

  2. I agree with you, IrritatedWoman, that the Cuban people should come first. However, that doesn’t mean that we should only trade for things the Cuban people need to improve their quality of life. I don’t understand what the fear is of opening up trade with Cuba. They pose no threat to us and it would only benefit both countries, economically speaking, to have this trade open. With that trade open, Cuba could do more in their country and we would have the chance to sell our products elsewhere.

America needs all the trade all the trade allies she can get. No one buys from America anymore. Everyone buys from other countries. If there is the chance for American goods to exported and Cuban goods to be imported all for the sake of the economy, I say let’s go ahead with it. I appreciate you coming to leave a comment on WeThePeoplePolitics.com.

I don’t agree with IrritatedWoman, Whenever we will get rid of the embargo then the Cubans will get the drugs they need from USA which they can not manufacture and also the economy will grow for both the countries and in this way The Cubans will improve the way they live. At the present scenario of our market we should export and import things from the neighbor countries to cut down in the shipping charges. That will help our economy. And also we Americans will also be able to get the Real taste of the great Cuban Cigars from our local cigar shops.
