To President Bush,
Allow me to offer my sincerest good wishes on your 62nd birthday. America has been looking forward to this all year. I apologize for being a day late, but frankly I was too busy enjoying my freedom.
You see Mr. President, this will be the last birthday you will ever spend in the White House as the President, and while only 30% of the nation is sad to see you go, I think it is best to think back on the impact that you have made on this country and it’s future.
Now, don’t get upset. Your numbers are not quite as bad as Nixon’s during his Watergate scandal, so things could be worse. In the eight years after the Supreme Court decided that you were our President, our nation has gone, and continues to go, through quite a bit:
- Continued action in Iraq,
- Illegal wiretapping
- Condoned torture in Guantanamo
- A failing economy
- A weakened dollar
- A soft labor market
- A lending crisis
- A poorly-handled catastrophic event in New Orleans
- Thousands of American soldiers dead
- Thousands more wounded
- An over $9,000,000,000,000 National Debt
- Public outcry for your impeachment
- A national energy crisis
- No Child Left Behind not working
- Increased fuel prices
- Becoming a global pariah
- The fact that Iran and North Korea would love to see us all die
- etc., etc., etc…
Sir, it has not been an easy eight years.
I confess; people like me have not helped make things any easier. People who are critical of their government never seem to be in the good graces of those in power, and vice versa.
But don’t fret, sir. It’s not all your fault. Mr. Cheney, for example, has not really helped the appearance of your administration in the public eye; at least not since he mistook a fully-grown white man to be a quail.
The good news is that it is almost over. As of January 20, 2009, you will fall into the ranks of former presidents: you will write an autobiography, give keynote speeches, have an academic building named after you, get minimal media coverage as a mediocre fluff story, give your time to charity, and be living proof when your fellow Americans ask “is he still alive? Or is that Clinton?”
Your achievements, President Bush, are well-known, well-documented, and will be remembered for years to come as we set ourselves up for damage control and look toward a bright future. You have set your legacy in the history books, and now it is time to move onward.
I hope you had a wonderful birthday, and wish you a relaxing remainder to your term. And don’t worry about who will take over your duties, sir – I have a friend from Illinois who is perfect for the job.
Best wishes from We The People Politics,
Sean J. Palmer
