Tighten the Border to Help Mexico in Their War on Drugs
Since 2006, Mexico’s president has waged a war on the drug cartels that make billions of dollars a year on the exportation of narcotics. By deploying the military and the police, his hope was to get rid of the cartels fast and effectively. Unfortunately for him and Mexico, the drug cartels have continued to prosper, have continued to make billions of dollars, and have killed numerous soldiers and police offers. Add to the fact that the amount of corruption going on in Mexico is only increasing and you can see that there is a real issue happening in our southern neighbor.
I’m not a firm supporter of policing the world, so I don’t believe that we should really be doing anything to change what’s happening in there. President Calderón wanted this war and he should be able to win it on his own. However, that doesn’t mean that America can’t help out an ally. There are ways that America can prevent this war from crossing the border, from the cartels gaining a ton more money, and from them gaining the weapons they are using to fight against the Mexican army.
First and foremost, America needs to take control of the American border. In no way should we try and control the Mexican border; however, it’s American guns that are being used against the Mexican military. The only way to prevent these guns from crossing the border is to take control of it. Tighten the border. This will benefit America in quite a few other ways.
No longer will people be able to cross so easily. Immigration is quickly becoming a problem. By tightening this border, fewer immigrants will be able to get through illegally. Secondly, America is the biggest importer of these narcotics. By tightening the border, these drugs won’t be able to get through as easily and that’ll bleed the cartels dry of their money. You can’t defeat a cartel if they have the billions of dollars they need to bribe entire police precincts.
The issue comes in, though, with how do you tighten the border? One of the simplest ways is to put more soldiers and personnel onto the border. There have been cartel linked murders in the United States linked to this war. So, naturally, it is in our best interest to increase the number of these soldiers. In no way am I suggesting that we invade Mexico because that’s imperialistic and that’s shown to be completely unsuccessful. However, by putting the national guard on the border, it’ll prevent the flow of drugs and prevent the flow of weapons.
With more people on the border preventing people from crossing, drugs from entering America, and guns from leaving America, Mexico will have a fighting chance in the war. Mexico does not have the means to fight this entrenched enemy alone. However, we cannot interfere in another nation’s personal problems; who are we to play police? What we can do is prevent that enemy from getting stronger. If they are benefiting off an American dollar buying their drugs, if we can slow that flow, they will lose their money. Money is the key to winning a drug war.
The United States needs to make an increased effort to keep the war in Mexico and out of America. When Americans are dying because of a war in Mexico, there is a serious problem. I’m not suggesting a full on deployment in America of soldiers; however, there needs to be more people there to watch the border. There are too few to watch the number of miles that people and things can be crossed. If we can prevent the flow of drugs into America and of guns into Mexico, the Cartel will slowly bleed.

How about tightening up gun laws while we’re at it? Make it a felony for a gun bought by an American to be found in Mexico. And the penalties should be ultra stiff, because the guns coming from here are involved in an untold of Mexican murders. Try the sons of bi+ches here for second degree murder if a gun bought here winds up killing a Mexican.
It might be a potentially good move; however, do you think that it is more Americans buying guns in America and then shipping them overseas or do you think that, instead, do you think that it is cartel members crossing the boarder and getting the guns? Also, how do you police that? Mexico doesn’t have the police force to focus on checking all the guns that are used for linkages back to America. They may be able to check those that are confiscated, but that is only a small number of the total arsenal.
That’s why I think that it is important that we take control of our border. If we have control of it, guns won’t have a way of crossing. If we catch guns, we can throw the smugglers in jail for smuggling. That’s a strong way of curbing the flow of guns, in my opinion.
I’ve got an idea: end the war on drugs and legalize & tax them. No victim, no crime. Let Darwin’s Theory prevail…
Well, there is always that. I wonder if that would actually work. Legalize everything and then we’re not spending a ton of cash on putting people in prison. I have an article written by someone coming soon about that topic. We’ll see what he has to say about it.
